The Valley Primary School
The Valley Primary School is a small farm school located on Altydgedacht Farm, in Kenridge, Cape Town, South Africa. Learners reside in the Fisantekraal and Dunoon areas. Most of the parents are farm workers on the Durbanville wine farms. Fisantekraal is a township with a population of more than 12,369 people. Dunoon is a small township situated in Milnertonwith more than 30 000 residents.
At present there is one shipping container converted into a classroom used for a literacy programme by an occupational therapist. The classroom needs carpeting to warm up the area.
There is no school hall or lunching area, so during winter time, the learners are forced to seek coverage in existing classrooms or they stand outside. We would also like to enclose an open area between two buildings where the children can find shelter from the elements and also use the space as an activity area.
Many of the school leavers in this area end up working on the surrounding wine farms, as they do not have any formal qualifications. For after school involvement with school leavers, we are partnering with a third party service provider that assists unemployed people in the lower end of the economic spectrum find work.
